   Applied Kinesiology
   in Chiropractic Examination

Applied Kinesiology is one of the systems used by your chiropractor to help evaluate normal and abnormal body function and is accomplished by performing muscle tests. The system is valuable in assessing, amongst other things, the function of nerves, muscles, spine and joints.

During the examination different muscles in your body are tested in a manner that isolates a specific muscle for evaluation. You will note from your examination that some muscles are strong while others are weak - perhaps a muscle is strong on one side while its opposite number is weak on the other side. The weakness may indicate not only poor function of the muscle, but also possible trouble in other related areas such as nerve, spine, posture, etc. Further evaluation by your chiropractor will reveal which factor is at fault. When correction is successful, there will be a remarkable strengthening of the weak muscle.

NERVE CONTROL.
Nerves control all body functions. Motor nerves control muscles; sensory nerves control sensation, such as hot, cold, touch, etc. Other nerves, such as those of the autonomic nervous system control organ functions. Muscle testing provides your chiropractor with an opportunity to determine which factor is the cause of your problem and will help them do the correction that will return your nerve function back to normal.

STRUCTURAL BALANCE.
Ligaments hold joints and give them stability. Muscles provide movement and balance, If there is weakness of muscles on one side of the body, joint instability and structural imbalance is the most likely outcome. This may result in poor posture, fatigue, pain and possibly many other ailments and degenerative conditions. Nearly all areas of the body can be affected, including the entire spine, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, ankles, etc.

CRANIAL BONE MOVEMENT.
Until recently, it was thought that the skull was a solid mass, primarily protecting the brain. Recent studies have demonstrated that the skull bones move with respiration and control the movement of cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid surrounds the brain and spinal cord, providing nutrition, lubrication, protection, etc. A bump on the head can jam the bones of the skull, causing abnormal movement, which may lead to abnormal function. During an Applied Kinesiology examination you may be muscle-tested on different phases of respiration. If a correction is needed your chiropractor will apply a gentle pressure in a specific manner to your skull, which will result in a change in muscle strength.

APPLIED KINESIOLOGY not only gives your chiropractor the ability to determine what type of treatment is needed, it also gives you both, the ability to determine the progress being achieved. As your treatment progresses, you will notice that muscles which used to be weak regain their strength. This, of course, is because your body is now functioning in a normal manner. When health is back to normal, your chiropractor can use Applied Kinesiology procedures to maintain the level of fitness by finding improper function and correcting the problem before symptoms develop.
